Proper care and maintenance can add years to your floor. Though each product is different and a manufacturer’s warranty should be consulted for specific cleaning instructions, we have a list of things to keep in mind when caring for your floor. Use doormats and rugs at entryways and in high traffic areas. This will keep outside pollutants such as dirt, oil, asphalt and sand from reaching your floors. It will also buffer against everyday wear and tear that is caused by high traffic. Use caution when moving heavy objects and furniture. Always lift objects in order to move them; never drag them across the floor. It is also a good idea to use a drop cloth or blanket and a dolly. Close curtains/blinds to prevent sun damage. Many types of flooring are susceptible to sun damage, which can darken or lighten your floor. Closing curtains or blinds that let in high amounts of sunlight will not only keep your flooring from sun damage, but will protect your furniture as well. Use floor protectors on furniture. This is especially important if you have a hard surface floor. Using felt pads or other types of wide-bearing and non-staining floor protectors will help protect your floor from potential damage.

Clean your floors on a routine basis. Perhaps the best way to keep your floors looking like new is to maintain them properly. Each product should be cleaned differently, so check with your manufacturer to find proper maintenance solutions. Clean up spills immediately. Letting spills soak into any type of flooring will make it harder to clean them up later. Many floors can resist stain and water damage, but it is still in your best interest to clean up spills as soon as they happen. Clean the spill up from the outer edge and always “blot” the spill so that the spill does not spread any further.

Tile and Grout
Clean your tile floors and grout on a daily/weekly basis with a damp mop. This will help maintain the appearance of your floor for a longer period of time. Never use a detergent or soap because it can damage the surface and promote the growth of mildew. Any other type of floor cleaner should work just fine for your ceramic floor. It is a good idea to apply silicone caulking as needed to maintain a proper seal along all corner joints. It is a good idea to not have stiletto heels on your tile floor. Even a small woman in stiletto heels can exert more than 2,000lb per square inch of pressure when walking. This amount of pressure can easily dent both wood and vinyl floors and even chip ceramic tile. Using protective mats will help to enhance the lifetime of your floors. This is a great idea in high traffic areas and entry ways. Using protective pads under furniture and heavy objects is a great idea to avoid scratching and damage.

Carpet

Vacuum Carpet weekly. Heavy traffic areas should be vacuumed daily if possible. Shampoo your carpet twice yearly. Getting carpets professionally cleaned is the best way to go, but you can also take care of this yourself by renting a steam cleaner or purchasing one. Sometimes carpets will have “sprouting,” or loose fibers, that stick out above the rest. These should be clipped to even them out. Never pull on these fibers as this permanently damage the carpet. You may also notice carpet rippling, or waves in your carpet. This typically happens in periods of high and low humidity and is very common. Even carpet that is properly installed may go through periods of rippling. If the rippling becomes an inconvenience, your carpet can be re-stretched. Absorb wet spills as quickly as possible by blotting repeatedly with white paper or white cloth towels. Never rub or scrub the surface abrasively, as a fuzzy area may result. When blotting, work from the outer edge in toward the center to avoid spreading the spill. Rinse the cleaned carpet area with water. Make sure to soak up any excess moisture by placing a dry cloth towel over area and weighing it down with a heavy object.

Here are some solutions that can help with your carpet care:

Detergent Solution: mix mild liquid detergent with water (1/4 teaspoon to 32 ounces of water). Always use a clear, non-bleach detergent. Use on stains such as: Alcoholic Beverages, Beer, Berries, Blood, Chocolate, Coffee, Cola drinks, Cosmetics, De-icer, Pet Stains, Food Dyes, Furniture Polish, Glue, Gravy, Dairy, Washable Ink, Mud, Mustard, Wet Paint, Tea.

Vinegar Solution: Mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water. Ammonia Solution: Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia to one cup of water. Do not use this solution on wool or wool-blended carpets). Use on stains such as: Blood, Chocolate, Coffee, Wine.

Hardwood

Do not wet-mop the floor. This could cause swelling, warping, de-lamination and joint-line separation, and void the warranty. Also, do not use any type of buffing machine. Normal foot traffic and soiling will modify the flooring's appearance over time. It is important to care for hard surface floors by vacuuming, dust mopping, or sweeping the floor on a daily or weekly basis. This will minimize abrasive materials that will lead to the damage of your floor. It will also keep your floor looking like new.

Use area rugs wherever possible.

They are not only an attractive and comfortable decorative accent, but they provide a buffer from heavy foot traffic and soiling. Make sure to use a non-slip rug pad, which can be purchased at your local home goods store. Also keep in mind that you should rearrange your rugs frequently in order to disburse light to different areas of the floor. Use a good hardwood cleaner for daily cleanup of your hardwood floors. These can be purchased at many local home improvement stores. Use minimal water when cleaning floors and make sure area is completely dry after washing.

Do not use silicon based products, wax based products, oil soaps or vinegar and water to clean your floors. The use of these prohibited products may prevent the application of future coats of finish from being applied. Do your best to keep all standing water from coming in contact with hardwood floors. Moisture can cause damage to wood flooring, and for this reason, it is important that you do not over clean your floor. It is a good idea to start by dry mopping dust off of your floor and then following it with a slightly damp Swiffer or cloth mop.

It is a good idea to have a humidifier or other means of humidity control.

This will help reduce the amount of expansion and contraction that takes place when the weather changes. Never wear stiletto heels on hardwood floors. If you have pets, keep their nails trimmed to avoid the scratching of your hardwood floor.

Natural Stone
Natural stone may be softer and more porous than ceramic tile. As a result, special care is given to these products. It may be necessary to seal your stone’s surface. Sealing the surface of your stone can enhance the ease of maintenance of your floor as well as increase its resistance to stains. You should ONLY use stone care products to clean your natural stone floors. Different stones may require different cleaning products.
