Ceramic or Porcelain Tile |
Tile is a popular choice for your interior floors and walls and offers unlimited decorating possibilities.
With today's technology advancements manufacturers many new tile designs and tile applications are available for both homeowners and commercial facilities. If you have never used tile before or it has been a long time since you have done so, you will be amazed at the wide selection of colors, sizes, shapes and new textures that are now available.
Ceramic tile is a natural product made up of clay, a number of other naturally-occurring minerals and water. All tile comes in both glazed and unglazed tiles. Glazed ceramic tile has a ceramic coating applied to the tile body which gives the tile its color and finish.
Some characteristics of glazed ceramic or porcelain tile are:
- Durable - a properly installed ceramic tile will outperform and outlast nearly any other floor covering product created for the same application.
- Easy care - glazed ceramic tile resists stains, odors, and dirt and can be cleaned up with a damp mop or sponge or common household cleaners such as Mr. Clean, Top Job or Spic and Span.
- Scratch resistant - Grade III and Grade IV glazed tiles are extremely resistant to scratching and you never have to worry about a cut or tear like you do with some other types of floors.
- Environmentally friendly - ceramic tile is manufactured using natural materials and does not retain odors, allergens, or bacteria.
- Beautiful and Versatile - modern ceramic manufacturing technology has created virtually an unlimited number of colors, sizes, styles, shapes, and textures that will add rich beauty and character to any room decor.
- Fire Resistant - ceramic tile doesn't burn nor emit toxic fumes. A lighted cigarette, when dropped on the floor, even if allowed to sit, will not do any damage to ceramic tile. Even hot kitchen pans or skillets will not scorch or melt the surface of glazed ceramic tile.
- Water Resistant - most glazed ceramic tile has a dense body that permits little or no accumulation of moisture. This means spills from common liquids found in a kitchen are not a big concern.
Some of the other important things to consider when selecting tile is:
- Slip-resistance of tile
- Size of tile compared to the overall room size
- Width and color of the grout joints
- Thickness of the tile
- Height variations of the floors between adjoining rooms
- Suitability of the sub floor for tile

| Hardwood |
| Hardwood floors offer the unmistakable charm and timeless beauty only found in authentic, real wood. They are never out of fashion and add real value to the home. Many interior decorators today prefer hard wood floors as the base layer and then add an area rug to enhance the room's overall color scheme. Manufacturing of hardwood floors has improved dramatically over the years and today's hardwood floors are more durable and adaptable to different types of living areas within the home. As example, longstrip and engineered hardwood floors can be used in areas of the home that they would never have been permitted in the past.
Today's hardwood floors come in a much wider selection of colors, wood species, and widths. Besides the classic North American hardwoods (like red oak, white oak, maple and ash) many manufacturers now offer exotic hardwood species from all over the World. Exotic hardwoods give homeowners the chance to better express their own personal decorating tastes with a more unique looking floor.
Another popular trend is the hand-scraped hardwood floors offered by manufacturers such as: Award, Anderson, Bruce, Mannington and Mohawk. If you want a more rustic looking wood floor than be sure to see the hand-scraped hardwood floors before you make your final purchase decision.
Homeowners looking to use hardwood floors have the option of purchasing three different types of hard wood floors. Although the end results may look the same there are distinct advantages for using each type under different applications.
- Solid Hardwood Floors - are a solid piece of hardwood cut into wood planks that are generally 3/4" thick. (Above ground level areas only, not recommended for concrete slabs.)
- Engineered Hardwood Floors - are several plies of wood that a glued and laminated together to form a wood plank. They range in thickness from 1/4" to just over a half inch. (Can be installed almost anywhere in the home, including over dry concrete slabs.)
- Longstrip Hardwood Floors - are really an engineered construction but are much longer and wider. The top layer of a longstrip plank generally has 2-3 rows of thin hardwood strips spliced together to form a solid surface. This gives the appearance of having 2-3 planks locked together, but it is really just one board. Longstrip planks can be glued-down, stapled or floated over a wide variety of sub-floors and installed in almost any area of the home. This includes installing over dry concrete slabs.
- Exotic Hardwood Floors - are used to described hardwood species from around the World. these hardwoods are not found in North America and come from Australia, Africa, Brazil and the Far East. Exotic hardwoods offer unique wood graining and colorations. Most exotic floors are available in engineered wood construction but some are available in solid hardwood planks as well.
Once installed it is extremely difficult to tell these three different wood flooring construction types apart. Both the engineered and the longstrip have several thin layers (plies) of wood that are glued together. By gluing the plies together you get better dimensional stability within the plank itself, which allows these floors to be used on job sites that have a higher percentage of moisture content than normal. This includes basements and over concrete slabs where solid strip wood floors are considered off limits.
Another choice you have to make is whether to want a pre-finished or an unfinished hardwood floor that has to be finished in your home. The pre-finished floors offer a wider variety of wood species and saves hours of labor and cleanup. While the unfinished wood floors allow you to have a really custom, job-site finish and a completely smooth, uniform surface. You also get an extended factory finish warranty with pre-finished floors, but not with most job-site finished flooring. |

| Stone |
Natural stone floors offer a distinct and beautiful alternative to your flooring choices. Each stone has it own unique visual appearance. Unlike glazed ceramic tiles, stone tiles do not have a protective glazed coating on top and the color goes all the way through the tiles.
Marble floors have been used for centuries and can add an aura of splendor and sophistication to any room. No two pieces of marble are exactly alike which helps create the distinctive natural visuals that are only achieved within nature. Polishing the marble tiles gives them a patina that enhances the overall beauty of each tile. Installation is really left to the professionals who know how to handle and worth with marble and other stones.
Granite is one of the hardest and most durable of all stones used in flooring. The speckled colorations found in granite a beautiful and subtle fine pattern of color. Polishing the granite adds a visible sheen and depth to each tile. Like marble, no two pieces are a like and color variations add to the natural beauty and appeal. Professional installation is highly recommended for installing granite floor tiles.
Slate is more of a fine grained rock with traces of metal that were present during it's slow, natural formation in the earth. Natural shade variations are an inherent characteristic of slate and enhance the distinctive details of each piece. Slate has a rustic charm that appeals to our senses for natural materials.
Travertine stones helped build the Roman Empire and adds to the appeal for these stones. Crystallized minerals and limestone create these beautiful beige stones with unique color and veining characteristics. Polishing the travertine stones give more depth, sheen and accents the natural variations of the stone. These two need to be installed by a professional who is use to working with stones.
Stones should have a special penetrating sealer to prevent staining and help protect the pores of the stone's surface. Use special cleaners made for stones that are non-acidic. Regular cleaning with a soft dust mop is recommended to help remove dirt and grit from the floor.
